The NHS Long Term Plan identifies cardiovascular disease (CVD) as a clinical priority and the single biggest condition where the NHS can save lives over the next 10 years. Following the disruption caused by COVID-19, we now have much to do to improve the detection and management of atrial fibrillation, blood pressure and cholesterol (ABCs).
NHS Health Checks are a terrific way to help save lives, and training is essential.

Training Overview
This comprehensive training covers the purpose of the NHS Health Check programme, the impact of health inequalities and the complete patient journey. You’ll learn how to interpret results, communicate cardiovascular risk clearly, apply the NHS Health Check competency framework and deliver effective brief advice that supports behaviour change.
What you'll learn
By the end of this training, you’ll be able to:
- Explain why NHS Health Checks are important and how they should be delivered.
- Recognise modifiable and non-modifiable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.
- Understand how to apply the NHS Health Check filters in practice.
- Understand how QRISK is calculated and used to assess cardiovascular risk.
- Communicate cardiovascular risk (QRISK) effectively using a range of communication strategies.
- Understand the purpose, interpretation and limitations of GPPAQ and AUDIT-C in clinical practice.
- Promote dementia awareness and prevention as part of the NHS Health Check.
- Signpost patients using appropriate clinical and lifestyle referral pathways.
- Use behaviour change techniques to support positive lifestyle change.
- Understand cholesterol and statins
- Appreciate vape myth busting
Training information
- Duration: 9.30am – 3.30pm
- Delivery: Live online training via Microsoft Teams. We encourage delegates to ask questions, contribute to discussions and share experiences throughout the day.
- CPD: 6 hours
- Certificate: Issued on completion of the post-training evaluation.
- Training resources: Available to download after submitting the post-training evaluation.
The training is commissioned by Surey Public Health and is FREE for all staff involved in the delivery of NHS Health Checks.

- Complete the registration form.
- You will receive a confirmation email with details of how to join the training within one week of registering.
- Reminder emails will be sent before your training.

- Your public health commissioner will be informed of your registration, attendance and non-attendance.

- Important: Declining or cancelling your Microsoft Teams invitation does not cancel your booking or notify our training team. If you need to cancel, please contact us directly.

- Our training is free to attend and funded by your local public health commissioner.
